Nollywood Portrayals Of Lagos Ladies Are Untrue...LOL

Nollywood is unarguably the biggest movie industry in Africa and arguably the biggest behind Hollywood in the world. The movie industry provides home video and cinema entertainment to Nigerians and the rest of the world.
It is understandable that movies are not entirely based on reality but like every other forms of art is considered a blend between imagination and a slice of reality. Nollywood however is sometimes notorious for providing a misrepresentation or exaggerated form of Lagos ladies. The issue with this representation is that some people believe them and think Lagos ladies are exactly the way they are portrayed. These portrayals sometimes show the ways to win these ladies hearts which is sometimes too dramatic to be considered real.
Here are five lies Nollywood tell about Lagos ladies

Good Mechanic

It’s a common plot in Nollywood movies to see a relationship begin between a random lady and a random gentleman just because her vehicle breaks down in the middle of nowhere and the poor young man appears from nowhere to repair the car and gets it working. The lady is head over heels in gratitude and they exchange numbers. A Romantic relationship thus begins. If you are a man and you need to enrol in a mechanic school before you can win a lady’s heart, you are in for a huge disappointment. Most Lagos ladies will thank you for your service and drive away before you realise it.

Look Into Her Eyes

The origin of this Nollywood fantasy is unknown but a scene will likely come up in a romantic movie where the man will look into a lady’s eyes squarely and utter the statement: “Look into my eyes and say you don’t love me”. The Lagos lady in question will suddenly be in a sort of a trance and not be able to say she doesn’t love him. Please don’t try this at home as you are likely to get a burst of laughter from the lady or worse a questioning look with an unspoken question: Are you alright?

She Can Commit Suicide For You

The Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet has influenced a lot of movies and Nollywood is one of the industry that has benefitted from this creation of romance. Nollywood’s portrayal of romance can be deep and almost unbelievable and usually, it is the lady who gets overly emotional about the whole thing up to the point of being suicidal if her parents are against the relationship. While Lagos ladies like every other lady can be emotional about a relationship, suicide is not commonplace. Don’t get that idea into your head that her life will suddenly end without you.

Rich Ladies Always Fall In Love With Poor Dudes

Nollywood usually portrays that ladies who come from wealthy Lagos families prefer to go and possibly marry poor dudes. This plot is so common that some it is predictable. The poor guy becomes the centre of her universe while another rich guy gets a tongue lashing because he is interested in her. While this is not impossible, it has been over flogged so much that it has shaped some young men’s fantasy about Lagos ladies. If you think living off a rich Lagos girl is trendy, you need to think twice as they are smart and like to rove with the same flock. If you are not careful, they are ready to take from you who don’t have.

Disown Parents

Lagos ladies are usually ready to disown their parents as soon as they say they are not in support of the lady’s relationship with a certain man. This is a Nollywood plot by the way and not an accurate representation of Lagos ladies. In the movie, the lady tells warns her parents that if they don’t support her relationship with her sweetheart; she will cut every familial relationship she has with them and even tell them not to bother to include her in their will. This is laughable as Lagos ladies are not that silly. They know they it is too serious an issue to handle than threatening the parents with such. If you are a man, don’t think you are so wonderful that she will kick her parents out of her lifer because of you.
